Far Horizons Farm is a dedicated, in-home breeder of AKC registered Cavalier King Charles Spaniels from English champion bloodlines. Our interest in this breed was kindled during the Reagan presidency when Nancy Reagan had a Cavalier at the White House, a Blenheim named Rex. For showing and breeding we have three males (Dreamy, Theo, and Magic) and five females (Sofie, Brooke, Romie, Brandi and Emma). Our Cavaliers live in our home with us and our two Lhasa Apsos. We are both retired from the corporate world and seldom are our Cavaliers left at home alone.
In an effort to find quality Cavaliers with long-lived bloodlines, we contacted and subsequently visited the homes of many of the top Cavalier breeders in Great Britain including the Top Breeder for 2006 and the Top Breeder for 2007. We personally selected and brought home many of our Cavaliers from the breeders we visited in Great Britain.
All our Cavaliers receive excellent veterinary care. We strongly believe in OFA (http://www.offa.org/) certification for all our Cavaliers. We attend heart and eye clinics with our Cavaliers to have their hearts checked by a cardiologist and their eyes checked by an opthamologist. We maintain our own records from these exams and register the results with OFA and CERF. Certificates can be viewed on-line for Dreamy, Theo, Sofie, Sonya, Brooke, and Romie.
All our Cavaliers are AKC registered, and the puppies are delivered with AKC registration applications. Our imported Cavaliers are also KC (Kennel Club) registered in the UK. We register each new litter at six weeks, thus the AKC paperwork is always available at delivery. Most of our puppies are sold as pet quality with AKC limited registration. If interested, please inquire about show/breeding potential puppies placed with unlimited AKC registration and full ownership. We do have a Questionaire for Prospective Companions -- inquire for details.
Whelping and raising young puppies is done in our bedrooms -- no kennel life for these pampered pets. Our puppies begin life in a whelping box in a climate controlled bedroom with the temperature maintained about 80 degrees and the humidity maintained about 50%. Each puppy is weighed every day for the first thirty days to assure healthy growth. For the times we are not in the bedroom with the litter, every TV in the house receives a wireless video feed from our camcorder in the puppy room. Our large screen TV in the living room uses Picture-In-Picture to monitor the activity in the puppy area (perhaps a good application for a webcam!). At about 3-4 weeks their area expands from a whelping box to an exercise pen. At about 5 weeks of age the puppies start to socialize with our other dogs and start to eat their solid food (a slurry). They are weaned at six weeks and start their dry puppy food shortly thereafter.
We were extremely fortunate to conduct our dog food research prior to the pet food recall disaster. We carefully studied every ingredient used in dog foods today to determine what we believe to be the good vs. the bad ingredients. We then tried several dry dog foods where we liked the ingredients. However, many of these holistic dog foods did not pass the taste test for our Cavaliers, while others did not pass the healthy looking/smelling poop test. We eventually discovered Canine Caviar dry dog food, but at least we were trying the safe foods before we ever heard about the unsafe foods. Canine Caviar dry foods have never been listed in the pet food recall. Our puppies start on solid food with a slurry made from Canine Caviar dry puppy food.
We had only one litter of puppies in 2006, and only one litter of puppies in 2007. We had three litters in 2008. The three litters in 2008 each had a different Sire and a different Dam. Our plans limit each female to one litter per year, or less. Our passion for the breed is guided by the CKCSC USA Code of Ethics and the Cavalier Club of the UK Code of Ethics. We have either already adopted, or shall adopt, the stronger of these two codes. In some cases our own ethics are stronger than either code.
Far Horizons Farm had a litter of seven puppies in February, one male and six females. Of the six females, four are excellent show prospects. We are keeping three of the four show prospect females and we placed the other one in a loving home in Frisco, Texas. The other two females were placed as pets in loving homes -- one in Cedar Park, Texas and the other in Glastonbury, Connecticut. We are keeping the one male puppy who is an excellent show prospect.
Far Horizons Farm had a litter of three puppies in April, two males and one female. We placed the girl and one boy in a loving home in San Marcos, Texas. The other boy was placed in a loving home in Plano, Texas.
Far Horizons Farm has a new litter, whelped on June 29, 2008. The new litter has two girls and two boys. These puppies are growing fast and should be ready for their new homes at ten weeks of age on September 7, 2008. We hand deliver each of our puppies, with delivery included in the price. We do not ship. We deliver to locations in most of the lower 48 states, after receiving a non-refundable deposit toward the purchase of a puppy. Puppy inquiries should include delivery city/state for confirmation of availability
Our puppies come with a one year health guarantee – inquire for details. Our puppies are kept current on all vaccinations and worming and have been examined by a veterinarian. Puppies over 16 weeks of age will also have their rabies vaccination current.
